GroundWork Proudly Sponsors SOLV Energy’s Skip the Grid Campaign.

May 29. 2024

GroundWork is a proud sponsor of the Skip the Grid campaign, an initiative launched by SOLV Energy to bring off-grid solar power to Navajo households in New Mexico. This initiative is crucial because grid connection for remote households can run in the tens of thousands of dollars. In addition to providing solar power, the campaign includes an educational outreach program that offers classroom resources and solar education for students.

The off-grid photovoltaic (PV) systems installed are highly effective. As a part of this initiative, SOLV Energy, together with the nonprofit Heart of America, CalPoly students and staff, and partners like GroundWork, equips households with ~400 W solar modules and battery energy storage systems. According to Alyssa Grant, SOLV Energy’s community relations manager, “It’s a pretty hefty system. In fact, you can actually run a refrigerator or a small stove.”

Cameron Hunter, EVP of GroundWork, says “GroundWork is honored to be a part of SOLV’s Skip the Grid initiative. As a certified B Corp and a member of the Lime Rock New Energy portfolio, we are dedicated to advancing the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 7: Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. Our hope is that this project will provide a template for future collaborations between educational institutions, businesses, and communities to help further our common aspirations toward a better and more sustainable world.”

Later this month, the SOLV team is heading off for their next round of Skip the Grid installations, where they will install off-grid PV and battery energy storage systems for 30 families near Shiprock, NM.

As a part of their solar education efforts, the team will also hold an education day at a school in Farmington, providing an opportunity for students to learn about solar energy and the active San Juan Solar project that SOLV Energy is building in the Four Corners Region.
