Snow and Albedo

Dec 01. 2023

The snowy season is upon us! The post-Thanksgiving snowstorm that struck the Rockies last weekend was measured by many GroundWork stations. Snow can raise albedo from a typical ~0.1–0.4 for natural, vegetated surfaces to ~0.9 — near 100% reflection of downwelling radiation! This can make a great case for bifacial PV in the northern tier and in high elevations.
